책 읽기의 중요성을 모르는 사람은 아마 없을 것이다. 하지만 요즘 아이들은 스마트폰이나 아이패드 등 테크놀로지의 발달로 책을 읽는 것보다, 미디어를 보는 게 더 익숙한 세상에 살고 있다.
나부터도 책을 손에 쥐는 것보다, 스마트 폰을 잡는 게 너무나 자연스러운 일상이 되어 버렸다. 아이에게는 책 읽으라고 잔소리하고, 내 손엔 스마트폰. 이게 무슨 위선인가? 이런 내 모습이 싫어서 되도록이면 폰을 멀리하고 책을 보려고 눈에 들어오는 곳곳에 책을 놓아두었다. 1층 거실 탁자에 한 권. 식탁에 한 권. 2층 침대맡에 한 권. 아이 방에 한 권. 손에 잡히는 데로 책을 읽으려고 노력한다. 그래야 나도 할 말이 있고, 아이가 엄마! 나한테 책 읽으라고 하지 말고, 엄마나 좀 읽어! 이런 핀잔을 마음으로 라도 듣고 싶지 않다. 한때는 일주일에 한권씩 읽을 정도로 참 좋아했었는데, 책과 점점 멀어지는 나를 느낀다. 스마트 폰이 확실히 한 몴을 한다.
책을 읽어야 어휘력도 풍부해 지고, 특히 대학 입시를 치러야 하는 학생들은 더욱 책 읽기를 소홀히 해서는 안된다. 특히 미국, 캐나다 보딩스쿨을 준비하는 학생들은 SSAT 시험을 보고, 미국 대학을 지원하는 학생들은 SAT를 보는데 SAT 리딩의 핵심중 하나는 어휘력과 비평적 사고이다. 이러한 사고를 논리적으로 만들어 주는 게 책을 읽는 것이다.
책을 읽는 시기는 따로 없지만, 그래도 7학년 8학년 그나마 시간이 좀 날 때 열심히 읽어두면 좋을 것 같다. 9학년부터는 조금씩 아이들이 바빠지면서 10학년 11학년에 절정을 이루게 되니, 되도록 책을 많이 읽어 어휘력과 비평 능력을 미리미리 키워야 할 것이다.
우리 아이 경우에는 2주에 한 권정도 읽도록 격려하는데, 학교 스케줄이 너무 바빠서 2주에 한 권 읽기에도 빠듯하다. 하지만 되도록 책을 곁에 두려고 노력하고 있고, 모르는 단어는 위의 사진처럼 단어장을 만들어 책처럼 보고 있다.
